Guided Backpacking Trips

Why go Guided

Joining a guided trek offers guests many unique opportunities, including: to experience an area fully and maximize your time by going with experts; to confidently tackle trips you otherwise might not try on your own; to travel light and show up at your chosen destination with everything ready to go for you; to not have to worry about permits, reservations, itineraries, meals, gear, local transportation and all the tiny details of executing a trip; to take advantage of backcountry trips that include stock support (llamas, horses, mules, or human porters); to learn a lot more about the area you're visiting than you would if un-guided; to learn the time-tested techniques professional guides use for hiking, camping, cooking, orienteering, planning, and general backcountry travel.

Stock and Porter Supported Hiking Tours

Ways to Hike

We have a tour that fits nearly anyone who wants to hike in world-renowned, breathtaking landscapes. For people seeking solitude, wildness and adventure, a backpacking trip is a sure choice. Folks interested in a backcountry experience but without the heavier packs should consider one of our stock/porter supported trips. For people seeking an outdoor experience but with showers and comfortable amenities, a basecamp trip is an excellent choice. And for guests interested in really living it up while getting great hikes in, our inn-based trips are wonderful options. Regardless of what you're looking for, it's very likely we have a trip for you!

Inn-based Hiking Tours

Who are the Guides?

We hire and train the best guides in the industry. To do this we require extensive wilderness training and experience, as well as naturalist education, even to interview with our company. Then we seek out career-minded guides, hire them as employees (not independent contractors), conduct periodic staff trainings, and require current medical certifications. In addition to technical competency and credentials, we also require excellent people skills. These extraordinary men and women have the ability to turn a great get-away into an unforgettable, inspiring - and sometimes truly life changing - adventure.

Small Group Travel

Our guests consistently tell us that the other people on their trip added tremendously to their enjoyment. We go to great lengths to put people on the trips that fit them best. We have a team of screeners who carefully assess each guest's information, and part of their focus is to look for disrepencies among guests in ability, desire...etc. If they see potential discrepencies they work with the guests and our customer service team to find a solution. However, there is no perfect system - part of signing up for small group travel requires an acceptance that you may or may not enjoy the other guests on the trip. Again, the vast majority of groups get along splendidly and tell us the other participants enhanced their experience considerably.

Custom Hiking Tours

Where to Begin?

We offer three primary ways to look for a trip: by destination, by trip style, and by date. An easy place to start is with our Trip Finder Wizard, which shows all of the options in one place. Or if you have an idea of a trip you want to do or an area you want to hike, then it's best to start with destination and narrow down the options from there. If you're interested in a specific type of trip - like backpacking, llama trek, basecamp tour, inn-based tour...etc. - but you're not sure where you want to go, then we recommend starting with trip styles. If you're available during certain dates but not sure about destination or trip style - or even if you are - then it's best to start with our tour calendar. Once you find the trip that interests you, just email us from that page by clicking on the "Book This Trip" button or by clicking on "Reservations" in the top menu. You can always call us at 1-800-715-HIKE (4453) to get the ball rolling as well!
