Description

Our 3-day, 2-night backpack to Havasupai Garden is a fantastic choice for a summer hike into the Canyon or as a first Grand Canyon backpacking trip any time of year. We pack a lot into 3 days to make your hike into the Canyon one you’ll never forget! Spending two nights at Havasupai Garden, we enjoy the shade and water of this spectacular oasis. We day hike to the Colorado River, soaking up spectacular views and enjoy spectacular sunrises and sunsets, creating an amazing overall canyon experience!

We’ll descend the most famous trail in the Park – Bright Angel – to the shaded oasis of Havasupai Garden, which for centuries served as a seasonal agricultural plot for the Havasupai Indians. Above us will loom the towering limestone cliffs of the Red Wall, and in front of us views of the Canyon stretch all the way to the North Rim.

The second day will take us to the very bottom of the Canyon on a long and exciting day hike. We’ll enjoy one more memorable dinner in the Grand Canyon before hiking back out the Bright Angel Trail on day 3. Give us a call today at 1-800-715-HIKE (4453) to request more information or book a spot on this trip.

Important: It is strongly recommended to book your Grand Canyon backpacking trip 5 months in advance due to the Park’s permit system. Backpacking permits are issued on the first of the month 4+ months in advance (see deadlines for each month.) Permits for the most popular trips sell out very quickly during the initial lottery, so registering prior to the deadline of the month you’re interested in is highly beneficial. You can also pick any dates!

Permit Deadlines

Grand Canyon’s permit process is complicated, but we take care of everything so you don’t have to worry about it! Here’s what you do need to know – Grand Canyon issues backpacking permits through a lottery system 4+ months in advance (deadlines listed below). Permits for popular trips sell out immediately during the initial lottery, so it’s important to register before the process begins.

When you register we will ask you for backup dates and itineraries, as they are helpful if your first choice isn’t available. If a permit request is denied, pre-permit registrants have top priority for open spaces on confirmed permits, and very often get spots. Finally, we have good success rates, but your deposit is 100% refundable or transferable if we’re unsuccessful. Still have questions? Call us at 800-715-HIKE (4453)!

Trip Length: 3 Days
Distance: 15MI / 24KM

DIFFICULTY LEVEL 3

Scale of 1-5. 1 is least difficult; 5 is most difficult

SUMMARY OF DIFFICULTY
We follow a well maintained trail on this trip. Hiking distances are moderate but elevation gain and loss is significant, particularly with a multi-day backpack. The longest day of hiking – Day 2 – is with light daypacks. Logs that cross the trail make for tall steps up/down, which adds to the difficulty. This trip may require hiking in 105+ degree fahrenheit temperatures from May through September.

Hiking Distances:

Up to 9 mi

Backpack Weight:

25-35 lbs

Terrain:

Lightly Rugged

Max Daily Elev. ↑↓:

3000 ft

Max Daily Elev. ↑↓:

Moderate

Please Note: Terrain, Elevation Gain and Heights Exposure ratings reflect the section or day of the trip with the maximum difficulty of each. Much of the trip is at easier levels. See the trip itinerary for more detailed information. Backpack Weight ratings are estimates that account for Wildland-provided gear, guest clothing, personal items and a share of group food. By packing light it’s often possible to stay on the lower end of the weight range. Pack weights also decrease during the trip.

PHYSICAL DEMANDS OF THIS TRIP

  • Hiking uphill or downhill with a 25-35 lb backpack for 6-8 hours
  • Maintaining balance and footing on variable, uneven terrain
  • Hiking in 105+ degree farenheit ambient temps may be required in the warmer months (May-Sept). Learn more about desert heat.
  • Hiking with moderate heights exposure
* For an official and complete list of physical requirements, please see our Essential Eligibility Criteria.

SOLITUDE LEVEL 2

1 least solitude, 5 most solitude

We rate this Grand Canyon hike a solitude 2 because it follows the most popular trail in the Canyon (Bright Angel). You can expect an hour of solitude at a time, primarily on day 2. We’ll be around other hikers most of the time on days 1 and 3.

ITINERARY

ITINERARY

Day 1

  • Shuttle to the South Rim: 1.5-hour drive from Flagstaff
  • Hiking Mileage: 4.8 miles
  • Elevation Loss: 3,000 feet

This multi-day Grand Canyon backpacking trip begins on the Bright Angel Trail, where we wind our way down 3,000 feet of switchbacks to a broad bench called the Tonto Plateau. Havasupai Garden is a perrennial spring that watered ancient Havasupai garden plots for centuries. Now it is a cool, shaded oasis that makes for a perfect summer camp or mid-canyon camp from which to access the Colorado River on a day hike. We’ll set up camp and then enjoy a delicious dinner as the sun sets over the western horizon of the Grand Canyon.

Day 2

  • Hiking Mileage: 6+ miles
  • Elevation Loss/Gain: 1,500 feet

After a hearty breakfast we’ll make an early departure to take advantage of the cool hiking hours of the morning. Today’s destination is the Colorado River and the bottom of the Grand Canyon! We’ll hike along Garden Creek, an enchanting spring-fed creek with hanging gardens and waterfalls. Our route will take us down a series of switchbacks called “The Devil’s Corkscrew”, then along another charming creek, Pipe Creek. Eventually we’ll find ourselves on the shores of the Colorado River. If time and conditions allow, we may hike down to Bright Angel Campground and Phantom Ranch, or we may enjoy a picnic lunch at the River and then hike back to camp from there.

Please Note: From December 2, 2024 to March 14, 2025 the hike to the Colorado River is unavailable due to trail closures. Instead we will hike across the dramatic Tonto Trail, which showcases dramatic 360-degree, expansive views and breathtaking vantage points to look down on the Colorado River.

Day 3

  • Hiking Mileage: 4.8 miles
  • Elevation Gain: 3,000 feet
  • Shuttle to Flagstaff: 1.5-hour drive from the South Rim

A casual morning and delicious breakfast will precede a beautiful hike out as we continue our trip back to the rim via the Bright Angel Trail. It’s a 4.8 mile hike from camp to the South Rim, where we’ll look back over our route and reflect on the beauty of the Grand Canyon and our accomplishment in achieving something that few have had the privilege of experiencing.

Please Note: We always do everything in our power to follow the set itinerary, however it can change occasionally based on temporary access restrictions, weather, lodging/campground availability, guest ability/injury, natural events like fires and flooding, and other potential causes. Normal terms and conditions apply to trips with itinerary changes.

Wildland Trekking Made It Possible

This was a bucket list that exceeded my expectations in all ways. The company was excellent to deal with and responded to, and answered all of my questions leading up to the trip. The hike and camping experience in the Grand Canyon was during record heat (up to 120°), which was very concerning. But our guide Josh was incredible. He had us manage around the heat with his schedule and expertise to maintain safety and comfort, while accomplishing the entire agenda. Including the optional extensions. Josh was amazing! The trip itself was one of the best things I have done, and Wildland Trekking made it possible. I can't thank them enough.

We followed all the pre-trip advice regarding physical conditioning and it made the trip a huge success. Wildland is a great option for a newcomer or solo backpacker.
