Arches & Canyonlands Hiking Tours

Surrounding Moab, Utah, Arches National Park and Canyonlands National Park high desert wonderlands of deep canyons, arches, spires and colorful, geological wonders. These national parks and canyons tell the story of the ancient cultures that once thrived in this region. Some even say Canyonlands National Park still holds the same ruggedly captivating allure as it did back when Major John Wesley Powell first passed through this area on his first exploratory journey down the Colorado River! Famous author Edward Abbey, who was a frequent visitor to these parks, described Canyonlands as "the most weird, wonderful and magical place on earth-there is nothing else like it anywhere" and Arches as a "monstrous and inhumane spectacle of rock and cloud and sky and space" that he wanted "to know it all, posess it all, embrace the entire scene intimately, deeply, totally."

Our backpacking trips in Canyonlands allow you to sleep under the famously mind-blowing starry skies, allow yourself to be engulfed by towering, multi-colored sandstone canyon walls, see canyon country's most magical arches, dive into the ancient stories of the canyons’ past, enjoy exceptional backcountry cuisine, and have the rewarding feeling of knowing you've had an unforgettable Canyonlands adventure! Our Best of Moab inn-based tour is a all-around hiking tours of the canyon counry surrounding Moab, including Canyonlands and Arches.

"I highly recommend Wildland Trekking based on the experience my husband I had backpacking in Canyonlands National Park. First of all they had found a spectacular and unique canyon to hike within the Park. We were able to view many Anasazi structures and relics as well as spectacular scenery and unique geological formations. Access is limited so there are very few other hikers. Wildland trekking provided everything we needed to make us comfortable and very well fed. Our guide was prepared for every eventuality, was an enthusiastic leader, and was familiar with the history, archaeology and geology of the area. This trip was a 10!"

More About Arches and Canyonlands Trips

The Magic of Backpacking in Canyonlands

Canyonlands National Park is in many ways one of Utah's most unappreciated destinations, and this is precisely one of the things makes it so great. Not only do our backpacking trips show guests amazing canyons with ancient ruins, surprising oases, dramatic Utah landscapes and true Southwest adventure, but also plenty of desert solitude. These trips are specifically for people who want to get off the beaten track, deep into the Utah wilderness, and explore the wonders of the backcountry - its wildlife, sunsets, sunrises, spring-fed creeks and breathtaking night skies. If you want a an experience you'll never forget, joining a Canyonlands backpacking trip is a fantastic way to go!

Why Arches is a Life List Destination

We include amazing hikes in Arches National Park and Canyonlands on our Best of Moab Tour, which provides guests the opportunity to explore two of eastern Utah's most amazing destinations in one of our most popular hiking vacation packages. Not only are Arches' namesake rock formations things everyone deserves to discover and explore, but the sheer number of them is staggering. Inside the Park there are more than 2,000 natural arches. It's the greatest density of natural arches and bridges in the world! Similar to how Yellowstone has the greatest density of thermal features in the world, Arches is the same for its signature Utah sandstone formations. Also, for literary or conservation enthusiasts, this national park is where Ed Abbey spent much of his time and where he wrote his masterpiece, Desert Solitude. It was his favorite place on the planet!

When to Go

Canyonlands and Arches are wonderful 3-season destinations - Spring, Fall and Winter. Summers are extremely hot and dry and are not enjoyable, or for that matter safe, in these Parks. Spring tends to have cool nights and warm days, a possibility of late winter storms, and is a peak time to be here. Fall is similar to Spring in its temperatures but is generally drier so less chance of storms. It is also an absolutely fantastic time to visit. And winter can be chilly during the day and quite cold at night, but is still excellent. Winter also offers the additional advantage of being the least popular season of the year, so you can have these amazing Utah national parks mostly to yourself!
