ITINERARY

ITINERARY

Day 1

  • Hiking Mileage: 7 miles
  • 1-way Elevation Change: 500 feet
  • Accommodations: Briar Patch Inn

We start this Grand Canyon and Sedona hiking tour with an amazing day hike in Sedona. We begin near two of Sedona’s most prominent and beautiful landmarks, Courthouse Butte and Bell Rock, and quickly climb several hundred feet into layered shelves of red rock sandstone. We’ll stop to appreciate and learn about all the different types and uses of desert plants in the area. Half-way into our hike, we’ll reach Cathedral Rock, a stunning, nearly 1,000 foot tall sandstone monolith.

We’ll rest in the shade of cottonwood trees lining the banks of Oak Creek, along the northwest side of Cathedral Rock. Your guide will prepare a tasty lunch and share some of the native and indigenous history of the area – this very spot was once a fertile hunting ground.

After lunch, we’ll complete our hike among the towering cliffs, sheer pinnacles and pristine canyons of Sedona. We will settle in to our first night’s lodging, relax for an hour or two, and then depart for a wonderful dinner in Sedona.

Day 2

  • Hiking Mileage: 8-9 miles
  • 1-way Elevation Change: 1200 feet
  • Accommodations: Briar Patch Inn

We will start this day with another red rock Sedona hike. This hike is one of Sedona’s gem hikes as we walk back in time on old wagon roads (now trails) to a red rock saddle that offers incredible views. This trail, named for the overhanging rock that shelters part of the route from the sun, is a Sedona must-do. It involves exhilarating steps on pure sandstone up Schnebly Hill vistas and panoramic views of the canyons below. This is a great hike to hear the history and story of T.C. Schnebly and his wife Sedona, for whom the town is named after.

After our hike and lunch on the trail, we will return to our rooms to clean up. If we have time and our group is game, tonight we will head to the historic mining town of Jerome, Arizona (45 minutes away). Jerome, a 19th century mining town built on the side of a steep mountain, is one of the most unique places in America. Your guide will give you a walking tour of the switchbacking streets, staircase sidewalks, haunted buildings, and amazing history of this quaint Arizona gem. We will enjoy dinner in Jerome’s most historic and charming restaurant before heading back to Sedona.

Day 3

  • Shuttle to the South Rim: 2.5-3 hours
  • Hiking Mileage: 3-6 miles
  • 1-way Elevation Change: 2500 feet
  • Accommodations: The Grand Canyon Squire Inn

Today we get an early start, check out of our rooms, and embark on a 2.5 hour scenic drive up northern roadways and Oak Creek Canyon to the South Rim of the Grand Canyon. Our first hike in the Grand Canyon will be down an amazing trail that descends the spine of a spectacular ridge and allows for BIG Grand Canyon views as the ridge drops off on both sides and in front of us. It is the trail to do if you’re looking for some of the best panoramas in the Grand Canyon. These panoramas and the more moderate nature of the hiking make our hike one of the most photographed trails in the country and a fantastic first day in the canyon for us.

After our hike, we will have the chance to explore some of the South Rim’s museums and shops before returning to our lodging for some relaxation. Then tonight we head to the rim for an amazing dinner at the historic El Tovar restaurant overlooking the depths of the Grand Canyon.

Day 4

  • Hiking Mileage: 3-6 miles
  • 1-way Elevation Loss: 1000-2000 feet
  • Shuttle to Sedona: 2.5-3 hours

Walking in the footsteps of prehistoric Native Americans, we follow an ancient trail through the Bright Angel Fault. Today’s trail offers a meandering descent into the Grand Canyon and is the most accessible trail that goes far below the rim. There are two potential turn-around points which can make the hike 3 miles or 6 miles round trip. This is a great trail to get down into the Grand Canyon and has great amenities like water, bathrooms and shade available intermittently.

As you descend the sinuous trail into the depths of the Canyon, your guide will explain the miraculous geological and ecological phenomena that surround you. We will enjoy a delicious picnic lunch with a view better than any 5-star restaurant. Eventually we will start our return hike to the rim, this time staring up at the towering cliffs above us until we are finally standing back on top of them, gazing down in amazement at the wonderful hike we just accomplished.

After our hike and some lunch, we will enjoy the 2.5- 3 hour scenic drive back through stunning Oak Creek Canyon to Sedona where your guide will drive you to your accommodations and where we will say our goodbyes to an amazing 4 days!

Please Note: The trail for today’s hike is closed between December 1, 2023 and April 14, 2024. During this time period, we will descend the Hermit Trail, which features big views, fossils, Native American history and a unique look at the geology of the Grand Canyon. Distance is 3-6 miles, elevation gain/loss of up to 2150 feet.

Please Note: We always do everything in our power to follow the set itinerary, however it can change occasionally based on temporary park restrictions, campsite availability, hotel availability, weather, road closures, guest ability/injury, and natural events like fires and flooding.

Experience of a lifetime

My wife age 55, two daughters age 22 and 23 and I age 59 wanted to see and experience the Grand Canyon and Arizona so we drove down to our AAA Travel agent and she recommended a five day, Grand Canyon all inclusive, guided, hiking tour with Wildland Trekking. The trip included 2 days of hiking the South Rim and 3 days of hiking the North Rim of the Canyon with all of our hotel and meal accommodations planned, booked and paid for up front by Wildland Trekking. We never heard of Wildland Trekking or an all inclusive hiking trip for that matter but it definitely peaked our interest so we booked the trip. As it turns out, about a month before our trip, we received an email from Wildland Trekking letting us know that the South Rim of the Canyon was not going to be opened in time for our trip due to excessive snow; our hearts sunk. To Wildland's credit, they gave us the option to go at a later date or substitute the two days on the South Rim for two days of hiking Oak Creek Canyon in Sedona. We agreed to substitute Sedona for the South Rim and it turned out to be the best thing that could have happened. Sedona's beauty was absolutely breathtaking and the hotel (the Briar Patch) and dining accommodations were outstanding. After experiencing the grandeur of Sedona, we packed up and drove over to the North Rim of the Grand Canyon for 3 days of hiking and a two night stay at El Tovar. The Grand Canyon was absolutely spectacular and unlike anything any of us has ever seen before. Pictures can not do it justice! The weather was gorgeous, everyday we had bright blue skies, daytime temperatures of 75 to 80 degrees with a gentle breeze and crisp cool starlit nights. So you may be thinking, hey, I can do this on my own and why should I pay Wildland Trekking to book my trip. My answer to that in a word is Doug! Doug Campbell was our guide. From the moment we spoke to him, we knew that we made the right choice in choosing Wildland Trekking. Doug made contact with us several times before our trip to discuss everything from the equipment and clothing we would need, to our dietary restrictions (we have a vegetarian in our group), our travel arrangements (we were responsible for our own arrangements) and our hotel and restaurant reservations. He explained in great detail where we were going and what we would do when we got there. Doug met us when we arrived in Flagstaff the night before our hike, gave us our day packs to use for the week and explained how much water and what equipment we would need for the next morning's hike. During our 5 days of hiking, Doug took us on trails we never would have found on our own. He talked about the geology behind the different rock formations, the types of plant life on the trails and in the different regions of Arizona's deserts as well as the wild life in each area. He was very knowledgeable when it came to all things in the American South West as well as Native American culture. He patiently answered any and all questions that we had and if he didn't know the species of plant we inquired about, he would look it up on his app. Doug was more like part of our family than our guide as he prepared our lunches on the trail during our hikes and sat with us at his favorite local restaurants for our breakfast and dinner meals. (None of which disappointed). Doug also tailored our hikes to our daily needs. My daughter bought hiking boots that were not the best quality and fit which caused her to get nine blisters on between both of her feet. Not only did Doug reroute our hike on the fly to get her back comfortably, he also worked on her blisters and wrapped her feet on the trail with the first aid supplied he was carrying in his pack. Doug Campbell and Wildland Trekking definitely gave us an experience of a lifetime and we would definitely book with them again. (You also get 10% off on future bookings once you take a trip)

Supported us to achieve our goals.

I traveled with my 15 years son and wanted to spend outdoor hikking time with him. Wildland Tracking tour supported us to achieve our goals. The five days trails are wonderful. We couldn't make them without the trekking guide. Both of us love the 2nd day tour in Sedona. It was challenging but the rewarding was huge too. These experiences created a series of common topics and shared memories for us. The arrangements were full of detailed considerations. We were taken good care of by the tour guide Stephen. He has rich knowlege about the wilderness landscape, plants, and he is thoughtgul to make sure everyone got what they want. Our small group is quite diversified and there are so much fun to travel with people with different backgrounds. We definitely will consider future trips with Wildland trekking again!
