Iceland is a vast, awe-inspiring island with volcanoes, waterfalls, glaciers, lakes, rivers, geysers and a kaleidoscope of rainbow-colored landscapes. It has an absolutely fascinating history, having been settled by the Vikings in the 9th century and since that time developing a charming and interesting culture. Iceland is, in short, an absolutely stunning world travel and hiking destination. We offer a variety of ways to explore and enjoy Iceland on foot: Hut to Hut Backpacking, Hut to Hut Trekking, and three hiking tours of the outstanding South Coast of Iceland.
Our Iceland Hut to Hut Backpacking Trips are opportunities to explore "The Land of Fire and Ice" on adventurous, rewarding, price point tours. With our sleeping bags, food, clothing and personal items on our backs (20-30 lbs), we trek across Iceland's stunning landscapes, hiking between a series of mountain huts, past geysers, hot springs, waterfalls, canyons, glaciers, and stunning views. These trips include local transportation, all meals, gear, pre- and post-trip lodging, hut reservations, and Wildland Iceland hiking guides!
Our Hut to Hut Trekking excursions allow guests to experience Iceland's backcountry with the comfort of carrying only light day packs (~10 lbs). With our sleeping bags, food, clothing and personal items transported between mountain huts by jeep, we set off across Iceland's stunning landscapes, connecting a series of mountain huts over 7-9 day trips. These trips include local transportation, jeep support, all meals, pre- and post-trip lodging, hut reservations, and Wildland Iceland hiking guides!
Along with backcountry hut to hut treks, we also offer camping, hut-based and lodge-based hiking tours of Iceland's fantastic South Coast. On these Iceland hiking tours, each day we venture out into the "Fire and Ice" landscape for day hikes to waterfalls, geysers, glaciers, coastal areas, and more; and each evening we return to our cozy accommodations (lodges, huts or camping, depending on which tour you select). These are all-inclusive trips that provide all gear, meals, local transportation, accommodations, pre- and post-trip lodging, and professional Wildland Iceland hiking guides.
Wild: living in a state of nature; not tamed or domesticated.
Wildland Global Adventures take guests on journeys through the world's best remaining wild places: Iceland. European Alps. Kilimanjaro. Nepal. Patagonia. The Andes in Peru and Ecuador. Galapagos. The goal is to get you into the deep backcountry of these amazing wilderness destinations, where you can immerse yourself in their natural beauty, unique ecosystems and invigorating wildness.
Nearly everything is provided for you, so you can focus 100% on the trekking experience and exploring the destination of your choice. Discover exotic plants and animals; learn about the geology, history and ecology of the area; and soak up the breathtaking intracies of your experience: stunning sunrises, quiet moments on the trail, glowing sunsets, spectacular views and more!
Adventure: an exciting or very unusual experience, often involving an element of risk.
These trips offer unique opportunities to escape your normal day to day routine and embark on unforgettable journeys to new and exciting destinations. Routine tends to dull our senses, while adventure - especially with an element of risk - stimulates awareness of our surroundings. It's in this increased level of awareness where we find the "freedom of the hills," the joy of adventure.
Joining a Wildland trip allows you to engage in adventure and risk with the guidance and support of experts. Unmanaged risk is stressful, while managed risk is invigorating. Wildland global trip leaders are extremely familiar with high altitude environments, unpredictable mountain weather, and 3rd world travel. You can step into your adventure knowing you're going with experts!
Travel: to move or go from one place or point to another; to proceed or advance.
Wildland Global Adventures are more than wilderness trips; they're also cultural immersion experiences. These trips allow you to engage with the local culture, while still being completely confident that you'll receive the quality experience you expect. Every trip has a U.S. based global trip leader along with local support guides and staff. By traveling with locals you'll get to experience the Quechua culture of Peru, the Kichwa people of Ecuador, the Sherpa people of Nepal and more!
Simply put, the Volcanic Rift Trek is the type of trips guides love to do on their own time. It's a journey far off trail into the heart of Iceland's wilderness, across remote rivers, and near far-flung lakes and mountains. The great thing about this trip though is that while it's adventurous and gets us deep into the wilderness, it's not significantly difficult relative to the most iconic routes like the Laugavegur Classic. And it's in the same areas as the Laugavegur, which gives guests and guides the ability to enjoy incredible solitude and adventure in one of the most scenic and celebrates areas in Iceland.
This trip utilizes the Iceland mountain hut system, which provides backcountry structures for sleeping. The huts are communal accommodations (i.e. multiple parties in large rooms), and are quite rustic. They are dry and comfortable compared to camping when the Iceland weather is stormy, which is relatively often. Food, gear and personal items are transported by guests in backpacks we provide, and total backpack weights will be 20-30 pounds. Your guide does all the cooking. These trips are continuous point-to-point hiking excursions that take you through some of the most iconic and stunning landscapes in Iceland.

Please Note: On our South Coast Hut-based Tour, we use mountain huts as a more affordable alternative to lodges and hotels, so that trip is not a point-to-point trek.
Basecamp Trips The Basecamp option means your trip will be based in vehicle-accessible camps, and as such will accommodate larger tents, thicker and more comfortable sleeping pads, coolers for refreshments, a variety of perishable foods, and access to showers. Every day features unique hikes into destinations hand-picked for their scenic beauty, adventurous hiking, unique natural features, wildlife, and/or solitude. We provide all meals and camping gear.
