Description

This exciting day hike consistently blows our guests away. With stunning hiking on the Appalachian Trail, amazing views from an exposed ridge, and unique rock outcroppings, Charlies Bunion packs a big punch into a one day hike.

We begin our tour with pickup in Asheville and make our way to Newfound Gap, where our we embark on our hike. Our route climbs for the first couple miles and begins rewarding us with amazing wonderful wildflowers and views of Appalachia. Much of our hike follows a narrow ridge, with breathtaking 360 degree views that create the feeling that we're literally traversing the spine of the Appalachian Mountains.

Charlies Bunion itself is a remarkable rock feature with incredible views. Once referred to as "Fodderstack," it got its name when a gentleman named Charlie, on a hike with Horace Kephart (an early, influential conservationist in the Smokies) took off his shoes and they noticed that the bunion was shaped like the rock. Kephart declared the rock would be named after Charlie's bunion.

We'll soak up the stunning views of the surrounding mountains, which include Mount Kephart, Jump Off and Mount Guyot. We'll visit the Jump Off, which is another amazing viewpoint, enjoy a picnic lunch, and eventually make our way back to our starting point across the spine of the Appalachians!

(Important: We run hikes in almost all weather conditions and very rarely cancel. See our terms and conditions for information on cancellations and refunds.)
