This
year's trip follows the canyon sections of the newly
rediscovered and historic Silver Trail (Ruta de Plata)
from La Laja into Batopilas with the actual guides who
rediscovered and mapped it!See the canyons literally from
top to bottom on ancient Tarahumara trails. Expect perfect
weather (dare we say that?), amazing vistas and great
opportunities for birding, exploring the natural and
cultural history of the area and some real adventure. The
route takes in some incredibly remote backcountry that has
seen few outsiders during the past 100 years-- since the
last Mining Company mule trains made their final
treks during the early days of the Mexican Revolution.
The group assembles in
Chihuahua City (American, Continental and Aero
Mexico all fly in there) and after a night in Chihuahua
heads to Creel and then the Sierra Lodge at Cusarare which
serves as the staging area. An afternoon hike, packing gear
and then a leisurely supper under oil lamp light will leave
everyone ready to hit the trail the following day.

A shuttle takes the group
first to the historic Silver Trail station at La Laja and
then a bit further where we meet our pack burros and
Tarahumara arrieros who will carry much of our gear to allow
us to walk in comfort. The trek will cover some 40 miles
over the course of 6 days-- all through some of the most
spectacular canyon country in the sierra. The group will
visit the old station at Teboreachic and will travel through
several Tarahumara ranchos and small villages eventually
dropping some 5000 feet into the subtropical Batopilas
Canyon...and ultimately right into Batopilas.
No previous experience is
required, but participants should be in good physical
condition. Trails are unmaintained and rugged with plenty
of uphill and downhill. We provide all backpacking gear,
food, transportation from Chihuahua and back as well as
lodging and meals in Batopilas, Cusarare and Chihuahua
(except for one supper in Chihuahua) as well pack animals
and American/local guides. The program originates in Chihuahua
on November 17 and returns in time for flights out on
November 25 in the morning
This is a "must do" adventure
for people who really want to see and experience the famous
and fabulous Copper Canyon!
