Description

Shining Rock Wilderness is a breathtaking mountain area near Asheville that offers absolutely fantastic hiking, sight-seeing and exploration. This tour begins with pick up at your hotel in Asheville, North Carolina. On the drive to our trailhead we will pass a spectacular waterfall - Looking Glass Falls - and stop briefly for photographs. After our waterfall stop we'll continue to our trailhead and begin our hike, which takes us to the summits of 3 different 6000’ peaks! Our hike is a wonderful loop allowing for new scenery throughout the day. Our first views come early after only 1 mile as we reach the summit of Black Balsam Knob 6,214’. We will soak up the phenomenal view of ridges and valleys that are iconic to the Appalachian Mountains. Our next summit is Tennent Mountain, 6056’, where more expansive views await us (if you're looking for a shorter hike, our Appalachian Classic hike on this page loops back to the trailhead at this point). Our hike then takes us in and out of Balsam Fir groves and along grassy meadows full of blueberry and blackberry bushes to the highlight of the day - the brilliant quartz-capped summit of Shining Rock Mountain at 6,040’. Here we’ll enjoy a nutritious lunch provided and prepared by your guide, and enjoy being in this magical place. We'll continue our loop, dropping us out of the mountains back to our trailhead. Our route back to Asheville takes us along the famous Blue Ridge Parkway where we’ll stop for even more sweeping vistas of these stunning mountains.

(Important: We run hikes in almost all weather conditions and very rarely cancel. See our terms and conditions for information on cancellations and refunds.)
